Beyond A Cute Dog Painting : Huck
"He always reminded me to smell the air and feel the moment."
Huck
“No love is the same. This one was different from all the rest. Huck was with me for 13 years. When I found him, he was alone on a beach in the French West Indies where I was on assignment. Tiny, dirty and full of fleas, with skinny legs that could barely hold him up, he still somehow seemed to bounce as he followed my every step. There was always something uplifting about Huck. Although abandoned, hungry and alone, he was full of unbounded optimism. He taught me so much. Every day before he went outside he would pull himself up to the window ledge and, closing his eyes, push his nose up to a tiny crack in the window and take a deep breath. He would really smell the air and, even though it was midtown Manhattan, his face looked as if he were inhaling a breeze from Maui. Huck was appreciating the new day. He always reminded me to smell the air and feel the moment. Huck was the best friend anyone could have. He died peacefully in my arms on 12/12/12. When people hear Huck’s story they say, What a lucky dog he was. But I was the lucky one, to be given this most divine gift. Rescue a street dog or adopt from a shelter. There are millions of Hucks out there.” - Richard Phibbs, renowned photographer

What I have been reading about dogs and culture :
How to Keep Pets Safe From Wildfire Smoke. Birds and pugs are particularly at risk of complications from poor-quality air.
Why do dogs eat grass? And when is it not safe for them? Grass eating isn’t new behavior, but the reason modern dogs still tuck into green snacks may be simple: they like it
And what if your dog DOESN’T like hugs? An older article, but lots to think about.
